Devi Gita (Class 25): ”Tat Tvam Asi” by Swami Bhajanananda Saraswati

Scripture class by Rev. Dr. Swami Bhajanananda Saraswati on Devi Gita, chapter 1, verses 51-53 given to students of the Ramakrishna Seminary at Kali Mandir via Zoom on 22 February 2023. 

नुमस्तत्पदालक्ष्यार्थां चिदेकरसरूपिणीम् |
अखण्डानन्दरूपां तां वेदतात्पर्यभूमिकाम् || ५१ ||
numastat-padālakṣyārthāṃ cide-kara-sarūpiṇīm |
akhaṇḍānanda-rūpāṃ tāṃ veda-tātparya-bhūmikām || 51 ||
51. "We glorify Her whose essence is pure consciousness, represented by the world Tat, and whose nature is undiminished bliss. It is She to whom the Vedas refer as their goal."

पञ्चकोषातिरिक्तां तामवास्थात्रयसाक्षिणीम् |
पुनस्त्वम्पदलक्ष्यार्थां प्रत्यगात्मस्वरूपिणीम् || ५२ ||
pañca-koṣā-tiriktāṃ tāmavāsthā-traya-sākṣiṇīm |
punas-tvam-pada-lakṣyārthāṃ pratyagātma-svarūpiṇīm || 52 ||
52. "Transcending the five sheaths, witness of the three states of consciousness, She is also in essence the individual soul, represented by the word Tvam."

नमः प्रणवरूपायै नमो ह्रींकारमूर्तये |
नानामन्त्रात्मिकायै ते करुणायै नमो नमः || ५३ ||
namaḥ praṇava-rūpāyai namo hrīṃ-kāra-mūrtaye |
nānā-mantrātmikāyai te karuṇāyai namo namaḥ || 53 ||
53. "Hail to Her in the form of the syllable Om, hail to Her embodied in the syllable Hrīm. To Her composed of manifold mantras, that is to You the compassionate Goddess, hail! Hail!"
